Sustainability in Focus with Bluedot Living

01 Earth Day Sustainability Randi Baird 3

From my roots at the High School of Art and Design in New York City to earning my Fine Arts degree in Photography, my photographic journey began with a passion for capturing life’s moments. However, it was my transformative experience as a Photojournalist for the environmental group, Greenpeace, that truly opened my eyes to the power of photography in shaping perspectives and inciting change.

For seven years, I traversed the globe as a Greenpeace Photojournalist, documenting pivotal moments in the fight for our planet’s future. From Russia’s devastated forests to the remote shores of the French Nuclear Test Zone in the South Pacific, my lens captured the stark realities of environmental destruction, while shedding light on those responsible for the crisis.

One of the most impactful expeditions took me to Hakodate, Japan, where I documented the fishing industry’s toll on marine ecosystems from long-line fishing. The urgency of these environmental issues fueled my determination to use photography as a tool for political change and education.

When I moved to Martha’s Vineyard, my commitment to environmental advocacy continued through my involvement with Island Grown Initiative (IGI), a nonprofit dedicated to promoting local food production and regenerative farming techniques. My photographs became a visual testament to the interconnectedness of our community and nature in this idyllic landscape.

When Bluedot Living launched its publication four years ago, with its mission to highlight individuals and businesses promoting environmental protection and sustainability, I found a natural alignment with my principles. Working with them, I documented stories that showcased the positive impact of sustainable practices in our communities.

Recently, Bluedot Living assignments led me to San Diego, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara, where I captured dozens of assignments for their West Coast dispatches. I was continually engaged by the stories waiting to be captured, many of them leaving a lasting impact and inspiring my creativity.

At Busy Bees Collective, I witnessed the power of community collaboration as neighbors came together to tend to each others  gardens. Through my photographs, I captured the camaraderie and shared passion for sustainable urban agriculture, painting a picture of neighbors helping neighbors in nurturing their green spaces.

Next, my lens turned to Inecui Flower Shop, a women-owned business that epitomized the ethos of supporting local farmers and artisans. With each click of the shutter, I celebrated the beauty of locally sourced blooms and the dedication of women entrepreneurs to fostering a sustainable floral industry.

However, it was my time with Laura McLean and her urban vegetable and pollinator garden that truly captured the possibility of an urban garden and commitment to sustainability.

As a native San Diegan and co-owner of Sweet Seedlings, Laura had transformed her yard into a thriving ecosystem, serving as a sanctuary for humans, her daughter’s pet rabbit, and pollinators alike.

Through my photographs, I endeavored to capture the essence of Laura’s vision—a space that not only nourishes the body but also nurtures community connections and inspires a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Next Stop – Los Angeles

In the bustling heart of Los Angeles, I had the opportunity to photograph Pura Vida Pizzeria and Chef Tara Punzone, the visionary behind this plant-based Italian eatery.

With every click of the shutter, I sought to capture not just the mouthwatering dishes but also the passion and dedication that Chef Tara pours into every aspect of her restaurant.

Full disclosure – I HAD to taste Tara’s infamous San Gennaro Pizza, served with cashew mozzarella, tomato sauce, Italian sausage crumble (vegan), peppers, onions and fennel pollen. Her Tiramiso is made with vanilla bean cashew mascarpone, espresso, dark rum, and cocoa. Both were delicious and an inspiration for a greener future, where yummy food and eco-conscious practices converge.

For over a year, Steve Sutton’s business card sat on my desk, a tangible reminder of a chance encounter at the Santa Monica Farmers Market in 2013. From the moment I met him, I was captivated by his passion for sustainability and his innovative approach to shrimp farming.

Determined to share his story, I pitched the idea to Robin Jones, LA Editor of Bluedot. With Tess Kazenoff assigned as the writer, we traveled south of the city, to Downy, CA to meet Steve and tour Transparent Sea firsthand.

Stepping into Transparent Sea’s operation, I was immediately struck by the magnitude of Steve’s vision and the meticulous care with which he executed it. From the sustainable farming practices to the cutting-edge technology employed, every aspect of the operation spoke to Steve’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship with a focus on a superior product. As Tess and I toured the facilities, we were immersed in the story of Transparent Sea—a mission to revolutionize the seafood industry while safeguarding our planet’s precious resources.

Final Stop – Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, a city steeped in environmental history, was the last city on my assignment list. As I set foot in this coastal haven, I couldn’t help but reflect on the significance of Earth Day, which originated here in response to the devastating oil spill off the coast in the late 1960s. Amidst this backdrop of environmental awareness, I embarked on assignments that would leave a lasting impression.

Among my favorites was Trinity Gardens, a church garden with a mission as noble as it was inspiring. Here, amidst the lush foliage and bountiful harvests, volunteers come together to cultivate vegetables and fruit trees destined for those in need within their community.

With each click of my camera, I sought to capture not just the vibrant colors of the garden but also the spirit of generosity and compassion that permeated every aspect of Trinity Gardens’ operation.

My lens turned to Loveworn— and owners Jill Johnson and Wallace Piatt, significant figures in the realm of sustainable fashion and conscious consumerism. Their importance lies in their innovative approach to addressing the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

24 Randi Baird Photo 26

Through their efforts, they have demonstrated that fashion can be both environmentally responsible and aesthetically captivating. By showcasing the beauty of imperfection and the value of craftsmanship, Johnson and Piatt have inspired a movement towards more mindful consumption in Santa Barbara and beyond.

By founding Loveworn, they have created a platform for upcycling clothing and repurposing fabrics, offering an alternative to the wasteful practices of fast fashion.

Wrap It Up: Sustainability in Focus

After an intense 12-day, three-city journey with Bluedot Living, and capturing over 45 assignments, I find myself filled with a profound sense of gratitude. Each assignment had been a window into a world of sustainability, filled with passionate individuals and inspiring stories. As Earth Day approaches, these experiences serve as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to be better stewards of the earth.
