When Erin Tilton, Development Director of the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard approached me to photograph their programs and create a series of community portraits, I knew this project was more than just a collection of images—it was about telling a story. A story of connection, support, and the profound impact the Y has on our island.
At its core, the YMCA is more than just a fitness center or a swimming pool; it is a hub of inclusion, a gathering place for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The Y offers childcare and preschool enrichment, youth development programs, senior wellness initiatives, and financial assistance to those who need it. It fosters friendships, provides a safe space for children, and offers resources that some families wouldn’t have access to otherwise.
As the Y embarked on an ambitious capital campaign to expand its facilities, the leadership team wanted to showcase not just the programs they offer but a cross section of the people who they serve and benefit from the Y’s offerings and services. My role was to capture both—the vibrant energy of their programs in action, and the heartfelt testimonials of individuals who make up the fabric of our community.
Photographing the Y in Action
Over several days, I immersed myself in the daily rhythm of the YMCA, photographing everything from early morning core, cycle and swim lessons to after-school activities, group fitness classes, and community events. Each moment was a reflection of the Y’s mission—to nurture the mind, body, and spirit for all.
One of my favorite sessions took place in the childcare center, where I captured the pure joy of young children playing, learning, and laughing together. These programs not only provide working families with a safe and enriching environment for their kids but also create lifelong bonds between families who might not otherwise cross paths.
In the pool, I witnessed the Third Grade Water Safety program, which provides essential water safety education to all third-grade students on the island, a life-saving skill that the Y ensures is accessible to everyone. In the fitness center, I photographed seniors in balance and strength training classes, staying active and engaged well into their golden years. On another afternoon, I headed to Alex’s Place, the Y’s teen center designed to provide a safe, inclusive, and engaging space for young people on the island. It offers programs, activities, and resources that support personal growth, creativity, and community-building amongst the teens from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School which is just across the street.
The Faces of Our Community
In addition to documenting the programs, I was tasked with capturing 15 compelling portraits of individuals who embody the diverse and interwoven stories of the Vineyard community. These were more than just headshots; they were visual narratives of resilience, gratitude, and commitment to the Y’s mission.
Each person shared a testimonial about how the Y has impacted their life. Some spoke of finding strength and healing through wellness programs, others about the friendships they’ve built. A few shared deeply personal experiences—how the Y was there for them during difficult times. How it offered not just a place to work out, but a true sense of belonging.
At the heart of the Y’s mission are members like Isaiah and Odin Scheffer, a father and son who rely on the Y for more than just after-school care—it’s a place where Odin is safe, engaged, and thriving while his parents work. For Rozetta and Rupert Hughes, the Y is part of their love story. After 50 years of marriage, they have a standing date every Tuesday and Thursday, proving that staying active together keeps both their hearts strong. Then there’s Michael Trusty, who first connected with the Y through after school and summer programs during a difficult life transition. Now a personal trainer, he credits the Y’s values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility for shaping his own transformation, and he’s dedicated to paying that forward every day.
These portraits and stories are at the heart of the capital campaign. They show potential donors and supporters exactly why this building expansion is necessary—not just to grow a building, but to expand the impact the Y has on people’s lives.
Why This Matters
The YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard is at a pivotal moment. As our island grows, so do the needs of our community. The expansion project will allow the Y to serve more families, provide additional programming, and ensure that financial barriers never stand in the way of someone accessing vital services.
My role in this project was to bring these stories to life visually—to create images that inspire, move, and connect people to the cause. Photographs have the power to communicate in a way that words alone cannot. They allow us to see the faces behind the mission, to feel the emotion in their eyes, and to understand, in an instant, why supporting the Y is so important.
For me, this wasn’t just another assignment. It was a reminder of why I love what I do—using photography to amplify voices, tell meaningful stories, and contribute to causes that make a real difference. The YMCA is about strengthening the community, and I’m honored to have played a part in helping share that message.
As the Y moves forward with its capital campaign, I hope these images serve as a testament to the impact they have and inspire others to support their mission. Because when we invest in spaces that bring people together, we’re investing in the future of our community.
